How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If your child is not meeting speech and language milestones such as no first words by 12 months, fewer than 50 words by age 2, or difficulty being understood by age 3 a speech therapy evaluation is the right next step. A licensed SLP can confirm in 1–2 sessions whether therapy is appropriate and what level of support your child needs.

Children can begin speech therapy as early as 6 months old when feeding or pre-language concerns are present. Through New York State’s Early Intervention program, children birth to age 3 qualify for free evaluations and services. We provide speech-language therapy for infants through teens up to age 18.

Yes. Most commercial insurance plans, Medicaid managed care plans and the NY State Early Intervention program cover pediatric speech therapy when medically necessary. New York State law requires most health plans to cover speech-language pathology services for children. We verify your benefits for free before any service begins no surprises.

Most families notice early progress within 4–8 weeks of consistent therapy. Meaningful gains in language and articulation typically take 3–6 months. Progress depends on the child’s diagnosis, session frequency and home practice between sessions.

Speech therapy refers to the mechanics of producing sounds correctly articulation, fluency and voice quality. Language therapy addresses understanding and using words and sentences receptive language, expressive language and social communication.
