How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Recognizing the early signs
Some children need extra support with communication that should feel natural for their age. Early identification leads to the best outcomes. If two or more of these signs have lasted three months or longer, an evaluation is the right next step.
Children may benefit from speech therapy if they experience:
- No first words by 12–15 months, or fewer than 50 words by age 2
- Not combining two words together by age 2
- Difficulty being understood by strangers less than 75% clarity by age 3
- Stuttering, sound repetitions or visible effort when speaking
- Trouble understanding simple directions or questions
