Questions parents ask us most.
Real answers to the questions we hear from NYC families every week. Don’t see your question? Our coordinators are one call away.
What is ABA therapy and how does it help children with autism?
ABA Therapy Services are among the most research-supported treatments for autism spectrum disorder. Applied Behavior Analysis uses behavioral science to teach communication, social, and daily living skills through structured, data-driven sessions. ABA helps children reduce challenging behaviors and develop the functional skills they need to participate more fully in family and community life.
At what age can children start ABA therapy in NYC?
Children can begin ABA Therapy Services as early as 18 months if developmental concerns are identified. Early intervention, typically before age 5, produces the strongest outcomes, though ABA Therapy Services are effective for children and teens up to age 18. Through New York State’s Early Intervention program, children from birth to age 3 may qualify for free evaluations and services.
Is ABA therapy covered by insurance in New York?
ABA Therapy Services are covered under New York State law (Timothy’s Law), which mandates that most commercial insurance plans provide coverage for children with autism. Medicaid and managed care plans also cover ABA Therapy Services when medically necessary. We verify your benefits for free before any service begins, ensuring there are no surprises.
How many hours of ABA therapy does my child need per week?
Recommended hours for ABA Therapy Services vary by the child’s age, diagnosis severity, and treatment goals. Early intensive ABA for young children with autism typically involves 15–40 hours per week. Our BCBA will recommend a specific intensity level after completing the initial assessment, and hours are adjusted as your child progresses.
What is the difference between a BCBA and an RBT?
ABA Therapy Services at Nexus are guided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a graduate-level clinician who designs and oversees your child’s ABA program, conducts assessments, and makes all clinical decisions. A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a trained paraprofessional who implements therapy sessions under direct BCBA supervision. Both professionals work closely together to deliver consistent, personalized care for every child at Nexus.
